The Story of Eric from Phantom

The Story of Eric from Phantom

When I was asked if I would audition for Phantom I thought that there were only two roles that I would be interested in doing in the show. One would be Eric, the Phantom, who vocally I would have been able to do, or Gerard Carriere, because of the narrative nature of his role, and the great duet that’s sung at the end of the show, You Are My Own.  I was offered Gerard Carriere, and I was happy for it.

In the scene in this video, The Story of Eric, Gerard Carriere explains to Christine how, and why, Eric is the way he is, and why he’s called the Phantom.  While my role in the piece is as the narrator, the story is told visually through dance and memory scenes. I like that Yeston/Koppits’ production of Phantom gives a little more detail into how Eric became the Phantom. It’s a very wonderful work, in it’s own way.
