Why Should I Change a Thing ?

Why Should I Change a Thing ?

Daddy Warbucks was such a neat character to portray. Firmly ensconced in his cool detachment from having any really meaningful relationships, at all. And then this little orphan girl, Annie, gets to him. He’s an orphan too. He’s been making his way in life, alone , since he was a kid, too. The relationship with Annie makes him vulnerable, in a way, that he has not allowed himself to be vulnerable since he was a child. To open his home to her, to invite her into his life, will change him. IS changing him. And for a moment, he wants to hold onto the life he’s made for himself, without her. But, just for a moment.

This song “Why Should I Change a Thing ?” Isn’t always included in every production of ANNIE! For one thing, it’s a bit vocally challenging, for some. And that’s one of the reasons that I like it. But, as far as painting the picture of who Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks is, and the challenge that a relationship with Annie presents to him, this song is perfect. I’m glad I was able to sing it in the show.
